Reimagine, Remake, Replay, the organisation focusing on connecting young people through creative media and the latest tech, Zeppo Arts and LUMI, Queens Film Theatre, which has been screening the best of independent cinema in Belfast for the last 50 years, has come together in collaboration to bring you The Playback Film Festival.
The three-day virtual Festival running from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th June will feature films, workshops and talks, all of which are programmed and delivered by participants in an event management course.
Throughout the event, the Festival will explore themes of nostalgic cinema through films available on QFT Player, a movie poster making workshop and panel discussion.
The programme kicks off on Friday 4th June with a Live Instagram event that you can check out @lumiatqft and @reimagineremakereplay, followed by the Irish premier of Sweetheart.
The comedy-drama directed by Marley Morrison features a socially awkward and environmentally conscious misfit meeting a carefree lifeguard. Drawing parallels with My So Called Life and Juno, the film will be available to watch for free on the QFT Player.
The second day of the Playback Film Festival will explore the archive collections from Ulster Museum and North Down Museum to inspire 16-26 year olds to create their own movie posters with local artist Laura Craig.
In the evening, you can curl up and enjoy the screening of Cinema Paradiso, the oscar-winning foreign language film celebrating youth, friendship and the everlasting magic of movies. The film is free to enjoy on QFT player at 7 pm.
As the Festival draws to a close, Into the Known, a panel discussion will explore themes of nostalgic cinema, escapism in movies as a response to crises in the past and present. The panel featuring Michael McConway, Dr Sam Manning, Leanne Briggs, Joseph O’Hagan and Sean Hughes will discuss how cinema culture has changed during the pandemic and whether the future is in streaming services.
The final movie of the Festival will be Monsoon, directed by Hong Khaou, featuring Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding. The visually stunning drama shows a man searching for belonging as he returns to his birth country. Available to watch from 7 pm on QFT Player.
